Picture a typical evening in many homes. Everyone is in the same room, but each person is somewhere else: a phone, a tablet, a game, a show. We're together, but not really together. If that sounds familiar, you're not alone, and the good news is it doesn't take much to change.
Here's a simple, realistic plan to bring back screen-free time with the people you love, without a fight.
1. Start small: one evening a week
Don't announce a total ban. Pick one night a week, maybe Sunday or Wednesday, and call it your family's "unplugged night." Small wins build big habits.
2. Make a phone basket
Put a basket by the door or in the kitchen. When unplugged time starts, every phone goes in, including the grown-ups'. Kids notice when parents follow the same rules.
3. Eat together at the table
A shared meal is one of the simplest ways to reconnect. It doesn't have to be fancy. Pizza on paper plates counts. Try a question to get everyone talking:
- What was the best part of your day?
- What's something that made you laugh this week?
- If we could go anywhere together, where would you pick?
- Who is someone you're thankful for right now?
4. Have a list of easy things to do
The hardest part of unplugging is "now what?" Keep a list on the fridge so nobody has to think:
- Board games or a deck of cards
- A walk around the neighborhood
- Bake cookies together
- Read a book out loud, one chapter a night
- Build a blanket fort
- Look through old family photos and tell the stories behind them
- Play music and have a living room dance party
5. End with gratitude and prayer
Before bed, go around and have each person share one thing they're thankful for. Then pray together, even if it's just a few sentences. It's a beautiful way to close the day and to remind everyone that they belong.
6. Give grace
Some nights will be messy. Someone will complain. That's okay. The goal isn't perfection. It's connection. Keep showing up, and over time unplugged night may become the night everyone looks forward to.
"And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works." (Hebrews 10:24)
Screens aren't the enemy. They can connect us in amazing ways. But the people sitting right next to us deserve our full attention too. One evening at a time, we can give it to them.
