Peace, Be Still: 7 Ways to Find Calm When Life Feels Like a Storm

By Jonathan Anthony Burkett··

Some days the wind won't stop. The bills, the news, the phone, the worries that wake you at 3 a.m. When life feels like a storm, peace can seem a long way off. But peace is often closer than we think. It starts with a few small, steady choices.

In the Gospel of Mark, the disciples were terrified as waves crashed over their boat. Jesus stood up and spoke three words to the storm: "Peace, be still." Here are seven ways to invite that same stillness into your own day.

1. Breathe slowly before you react

When stress hits, our breathing gets fast and shallow. Try this: breathe in slowly for four counts, hold for four, and breathe out for six. Repeat it five times. A longer exhale is one of the simplest ways to help your body settle down.

2. Start the morning with a word, not a screen

Before you check your phone, give the first five minutes of your day to something that feeds your spirit: a verse, a short prayer, or a few lines in a journal. What you put in first often sets the tone for everything that follows.

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." (Psalm 46:1)

3. Name what you can control

Take a sheet of paper and draw a line down the middle. On the left, write what's worrying you that you can't control. On the right, write what you can. Pray over the left side and hand it to God. Then pick one small action from the right side and do it today.

4. Step outside

A short walk in daylight, even ten minutes, can clear your head and lift your mood. Leave the earbuds out for once. Notice the sky, the trees, the sounds around you. Creation has a way of reminding us how big God is and how small most of our worries are.

5. Turn down the noise

Constant news and endless scrolling can keep your mind in storm mode all day. Choose one or two times a day to catch up, and turn off notifications you don't need. Protecting your peace isn't selfish. It's wisdom.

6. Say it out loud to someone you trust

Storms feel bigger when we carry them alone. Call a friend, talk to your pastor, or sit down with family. Simply saying "I'm struggling" can lighten the load. And if the weight feels too heavy for too long, reaching out to a doctor or counselor is a strong and faithful step, not a weak one.

7. End the day with gratitude

Before you sleep, write down three things you're thankful for today, no matter how small: a warm meal, a kind word, a song that lifted you. Gratitude doesn't deny the storm. It reminds you of the blessings that are still there in the middle of it.

The calm after the storm

You don't have to do all seven at once. Pick one and try it this week. Peace grows the same way a storm passes: little by little, and then all at once you notice the sky is clearing.

"Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning." (Psalm 30:5)

Which of these will you try first? Tell us in the comments, and share this with someone who needs a little peace today.
